Best Android and iPhone Call Screening Apps in 2026
Before you install anything, check what your phone already does. On a supported Pixel, Google screens calls at no extra cost. On an iPhone running iOS 26, Apple asks unknown callers for a reason. A separate app is worth paying for when you want the call answered — spoken to, a message taken, a transcript afterwards — rather than filtered.

What Call Screening Actually Does
Three different behaviours get sold under the same words, and picking the wrong one is why people still miss the courier:
- Caller ID — the phone still rings, but the number carries a name or a spam label. A label is a guess, not proof of identity.
- Blocking — the call is silenced or declined before it reaches you, based on a list of numbers other people reported.
- Screening — something answers first and asks who is calling and why, then hands you the answer.
Only the third one involves anyone speaking to the caller, and that is the difference that decides whether the courier at your gate gets through. On Android: Start With What Your Phone Already Does
Phone by Google offers caller ID and spam protection on supported Android devices. On supported Pixel phones, automatic Call Screen can answer selected call categories, ask who is calling and why, show a live transcript, hang up on a call it decides is spam, or ring the phone with the caller's answer.
Google lists automatic Call Screen for Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Manual screening is available on Pixel phones in a broader set of countries, and on selected Android devices in the United States and Canada. If you are on a mid-range Android outside those lists, the honest answer is that nothing is answering your calls today.
One limitation matters more than the feature list: Google says automatic Call Screen should not be used with call forwarding, because screened calls will not be forwarded. Any app that answers through forwarding — OsmO included — therefore conflicts with it. Pick one. On iPhone: Start With Apple's Built-In Screening
iOS 26 added Call Screening, which asks an unknown caller to say why they are calling before the phone rings. It is part of the operating system, it costs nothing extra, and for many people it is enough on its own.
Where it stops is depth. It asks for a reason; it does not hold a conversation, take a message on your behalf, or place calls out for you. It also overlaps with any assistant that answers through forwarding, so running both usually means one of them never sees the call — most people choose one. AI Call Screening Apps: What Changes When the App Talks Back
An AI call screening app answers the phone and has a short conversation instead of looking the number up. It asks who is calling and why, applies rules you wrote — connect family, share a gate code with delivery drivers, decline loan offers — and gives you a record afterwards.
The record is the part people regret not checking. Some options hand you a one-line reason. Some hand you a summary. Some hand you the full transcript. Decline an incoming call to the Assistant and it can ask the caller questions, then show you who is calling and why so you can decide whether to pick up. Truecaller's support pages list it for Android and iOS, and its product page limits availability to certain countries. It handles incoming calls only.
Truecaller also runs a public number-search directory, which is a different privacy model from an assistant with no public directory behind it. Hiya is built around identification rather than conversation: caller ID, suspected-fraud warnings and blocking, with a Call Screener that asks who is calling. Hiya's product page lists Basic protection — caller ID, basic blocking, spam reporting — as free, and puts Call Screener, voice detection, fraud-call detection and advanced blocking under Premium. How to Choose
Four questions, in this order:
- 1. What does my phone already do? Check Phone by Google on Android, or Settings on an iPhone running iOS 26. If it covers you, stop here.
- 2. Do I need the caller spoken to, or just labelled? Labelling is caller ID and it is cheap. Being spoken to is screening and it costs more.
- 3. What record do I want afterwards? A reason, a summary, or a transcript. Ask this before you pay, not after you miss something.
- 4. Does it work where I am? Device, Android or iOS version, country, carrier and plan. An app you can download is not the same as a feature that is switched on for you.
What None of Them Can Do
Google says plainly that not all spam calls and robocalls can be detected, and no screening product should be read as a promise. Transcripts can be incomplete. A caller who hangs up on a screening prompt leaves you with nothing but a missed call. An app that answers through forwarding depends on your carrier, and a Pixel's automatic screening and forwarding cannot both be on.
Run a short real-world test before you commit: call yourself from a number that is not in your contacts, see what the caller hears, check where the call lands in your history, and confirm what record you get. Keep your carrier's own spam controls on when they are compatible with the setup you choose.
