Five apps · checked August 2026

Five apps say they answer your phone. Only three call back out.

Every one of these is genuinely good at something, and genuinely wrong for somebody. Rather than another nine-minute read, answer two questions and we will tell you which to install — including when that is not us.

Yes, we make one of them. That is exactly why the picker sends you elsewhere when the honest answer is elsewhere.

1 · What do you actually need?

2 · Which phone?

First, the definition

What an AI call assistant actually is

An AI call assistant answers the phone for you and talks to the caller. It asks who is calling and why, decides what to do with the answer, and writes down what happened. Most run on the number you already have, through conditional call forwarding — so the calls you do not pick up route to the assistant instead of voicemail. Availability and setup vary by carrier, plan, country and device.

The five jobs

Not every app below does all five. Work out which ones you actually need before you install anything.

Screens unknown callers — answers numbers that are not in your contacts and asks, in plain language, who is calling and what they want.

Catches spam and robocalls — using caller reputation, what the caller says, or both. OsmO drops the call and keeps the transcript, so you can read what a spammer wanted without having listened.

Answers when you cannot — in a meeting, driving, or after hours. It takes the message and connects the callers you said to connect.

~

Places calls for you — bookings, price checks, chasing a refund, sitting in a hold queue. Only three of the five below do this at all.

~

Writes it down — a summary, a full transcript, or only a one-line reason. This is the row people regret not checking.

Assistant, not blocker

The distinction the category names blur — and the fastest way to tell which of the five below will actually help you.

A spam blocker works from a list. It matches the incoming number against a database of numbers other people reported, then silences or labels it. Nobody speaks to the caller, so a number nobody has reported yet gets through, and a wrongly-listed number never reaches you.

An AI call assistant has the conversation instead. It hears the reason out loud and acts on it — which is why a courier at your gate and a bank asking for a code get handled differently even though both are unknown numbers.

Some products do both. The question worth asking is whether the app talks to the caller or only looks them up — and what you get afterwards. How AI call screening works walks through the flow step by step.

The shortlist

What each one is actually for

Ordered by how much of the job they take off you — not by who paid for the page. Each card says who should skip it, because that is the part most roundups leave out.

01 Most of the job

OsmO

iPhone & Android · US & Canada

Answers the calls you do not, asks who is calling and why, takes a message, and writes you a summary with the full transcript. Also places calls — including several at once — and waits in hold queues.

Incoming: answers, asks, takes a message

Outbound: parallel calls, hold queues

Summary, transcript and recording

Per-caller rules, cloned voice, own line

Pick it if  › you want the call handled, not just labelled.

Skip it if  › you are outside the US or Canada, or you need reverse number lookup.

02 Closest rival

Call.io

iPhone & Android

Answers using custom rules you set, takes notes, screens unknown callers, and returns notes, a transcript and a summary. It places outbound calls too, including reservation requests.

Incoming: answers with custom rules

Outbound: yes, one call at a time

Uses call forwarding — check your carrier

Pick it if  › you want both halves and our carrier list does not cover you.

Skip it if  › you need several places called at the same time.

03 iPhone only

Mitra

iPhone only · requires iOS 26

A personal AI phone assistant that picks up incoming calls, makes calls, follows up, screens spam and summarises what happened — all on your own number.

Incoming: picks up and screens

Outbound: calls and follow-ups

04 Incoming only

Hiya Spam Blocker

iPhone & Android · US & Canada

Built around identification rather than conversation: caller ID, suspected-fraud warnings and auto-blocking, plus a Call Screener that answers calls you do not pick up and asks who is calling.

Where the field thins out

Answering is the easy half

Screening a call means saying no on your behalf. Placing one means getting something done. Two of these five cannot make a call at all — and only one will ring several places at once.

Parallel calling is the part nobody else offers. Hand OsmO a task and a few places — it rings them together, sits through the hold music, and comes back with one answer.

★★★★★

“It screens scam callers … and automatically blocked them when they refused to display their name and contact information, so they won’t bother me. Affordable to me. Thank you — 5 stars.”

David L. · Google Play

★★★★★

“Too good — an AI call assistant app I’d needed for a long time, with AI auto-call features that are not available in every app … professional looking design … one of the best for its price and design.”

Questions

What people ask before installing

There is no single winner, which is why this page opens with a picker rather than a ranking. If you want both incoming and outbound calling on either platform, OsmO and Call.io are the two real options. On iPhone only, add Mitra. For identification and spam, Hiya is the focused choice. For basic ask-before-ringing on a recent iPhone, Apple already gives it to you free.
